BIOGRAPHY

Rob Wynne puts to the test the limits between kitsch and beauty, between sentimentality and depth, through miscellaneous objects, installations, drawings and paintings of delicate realization. He has been freely appropriating fragments of texts and images taken from literature, opera, theater or visual arts. Combining these references to different media and techniques, both traditional (embroidery, for example) or contemporary (digital printing), he creates a universe which is characterized both by romantic nostalgia and caustic humor. Although he uses a horizon of techniques and means, blown glass is a fundamental part of its work. When he asserts that he is "trying to break the rules and assimilate the imperfection in working with glass", Wynne demonstrates the malleability of this material, transforming it into texts and exquisite and absurd objects, ranging from eyeballs to mushrooms. The text is also a key element in his work. In his "Embroidered Paintings", for example, he embroiders open words and phrases, such as "returns", on Rococo images, which elevate and intricate his cloying sentimentality; suggesting that the serious and the syrupy can be tones of the same thing.

His works appear in the most prestigious collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art's or the Whitney Museum's, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and in the Fonds régional d'art contemporain des pays de la Loire in France.
